i have been advised to try it on my knees, as i have acute pain in both. Did it help at all?
I have had a X ray which has shown up Arthritis which i already knew i had but the pain is off the chart now. I can't take codeine because of side effects, but was told by GP to try the Voltarol and see if it helps.

Question Author
or is there anything i can do to alleviate the pain.
Question Author
"else"
Emmie, you say you can’t take Codeine,do you also have a reaction to Ibuprofen?
Question Author
don't think so Grumpy, i have tried the tablets before and they didn't help with the pain.
Both myself and husband use it. I use the back pain one for my sciatica when it hits. My husband uses the joint pain one for his knee. I also used it for my knee when I fell up some steps earlier this year. Great stuff! Not cheap though £10/12 according to where you buy it, but it really works.
Question Author
i have some voltarol already, so will give it a go, i didn't before but the pain has got so much worse.
My other half suffers badly with similar problems and she swears by the freeze gels that are commonly available
They do not eradicate the pain but certainly ease matters
Question Author
what are freeze gels SB?
I would have thought that Ibuprofen would have helped, also Voltarol is an Ibuprofen based gel.

I am aware of that Grumpy, the doctor knows i have tried various meds to help with the pain but nothing has worked so far. My blood tests showed i have inflammation and that is why he has advised to try it.
A 2005 clinical study found that topical diclofenac diethylamine gel is an effective treatment for pain from osteoarthritis in knees:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16331769/

Voltarol make several different versions of their product, with one specifically intended for use in osteoarthritis. If you decide to try it, don't give up on it too early as (quote) "For arthritis pain it may be necessary to apply the gel for up to 7 days to allow its effect to build up on the joint and before an improvement in pain is noticed":

Question Author
thanks SB, will try that too... anything is better than this wretched pain, i can't put a foot down without it jarring, nor sit properly,
i have been advised by the doc it might come to seeing an orthopedic surgeon for knee surgery.
Question Author
thank you Chris,
Also if your GP has mentioned using it he should be able to put it on prescription for you. There are few on the market and so should be able to give you the one needed. Some of them are quite expensive so could save you a few quid. A knee brace is also another option just to give a bit more support.
Question Author
i could ask them to put it on prescription i guess, but not sure if they would. it would mean further calls to the GP and i had a day of making calls to them yesterday and to the clinic where i have been diagnosed with OA>
Question Author
i did want an MRI scan instead of an X Ray, as that shows up a lot more than an X Ray, but it wasn't suggested.
Yes - I use it all the time.

I'm 'only' in my early 50s, but due to 30 years of rugby I have intermittent problems with my knees and ankles.

Other than the cream (which I've never found works particularly well), you can no longer by volterol over the counter, so when I go to Spain, as I did in September, I stock up with boxes and boxes of 50mg tablets. It's also dirt cheap - €2.50 for a box of about 40 tablets.
Question Author
i bought voltarol over the counter?
Amazon sell it.
