went to dentist this morning and I've got to have a root canal done i'm really frightened of the dentist and this is really worrying me ,does it hurt as I've heard horror stories.

I have had this done and it was ok. Mine was done in two sessions. I was strapped into the chair and turned virtually upside down to enable the work to be carried out.

Do NOT look on the web for research about this - just trust your dentist and relax, you will be fine.

I am also terrified of the dentist but have had this done 3 times and it's usually really nowhere near as bad as people make out because you are so numb.
Personally I think it's better than having a filling as there is far less repeat drilling. For me only the initial injection hurt after that I felt nothing.

It's absolutely painless. The anticipation is far worse than the reality.

Dentist freeze gum before numbing needle. I pinch myself hard so I control pain. Try it - 'mind over matter'

Don't worry...it will be painless. I am scared of anything that hurts me ..or is likely to hurt....but absolutely no problem and no difficulties at all afterwards. Chin up and chest out and be brave....x

thankyou all ,my dentist is a lovely man and knows I'm a wimp when it comes to dentistry he has it on my notes, its booked in for 8.30 17th dec or earlier if they have a cancellation .xx

It is not a painful procedure. I had mine done in two sessions as well.
Just to say that you may have some discomfort afterwards from having your mouth open for long.
A couple of paracetamol should be all that you need.

It's basically the same as a normal filling, except it needs to be drilled deeper, so you'll just be in the chair longer.
The tooth and surrounding area will be numbed, so the only pain you'll feel is the initial needle numbing your gum and tooth.
The worst bit is just the sensation of the drilling .... at worst I'd describe it as uncomfortable, but def not painful.
You'll probably be a little tender after the numbness as worn off, but that will soon subside.

Not if you've a decent dentist. If you get a minor twinge part way through they can give more Lidocaine, or whatever.

Dentists in this day and age are very cleaver and if you will be in pain they will administer aesthetics anyhow. My good friend had a root canal done, he came out high and in no pain at all.

he did say any discomfort what ever if I held my hand up he will stop ,I can bear most things but I had such dreadful times at the school dentist who was a butcher it has left me with this phobia .

Dentists have changed a lot. The qualifications you need now a' days are superior to those of the past. No one will be butchering anything at all! They are very gentle. We're in 2018 :)

I had this done a month or so back, second time around, first time was a breeze, this time was a little bit uncomfortable, initial numbing injection, then s little subsequent pain as she worked on it, but I then asked for another injection and felt nothing at all until much later one it had been done, initial tenderness mainly around the injection site(s), and as it was the bottom jaw it felt a little bruised for a few days. I would say the most notably unpleasant bit (if you can even call it that) was when she put a long thin thing down into my gum, but it was only cos I saw the thing I wouldn't have if I had just closed my eyes and thought if my holidays, the last bit I found the hardest was clenching down on the x-ray panel - my bag reflex goes haywire, but all in all apart from these two VERY minor things, this time round was also a breeze. You will be absolutely fine, and btw I usually hate going to the dentist, hence why I hadn't been for nigh on 8 years and was the main reason I ended up needing this type of dental surgery!!!!!! Always worth going, and I will now. Regularly x
