My OH has been on it for years as he has a stomach ulcer. He no longer needs to take it daily since he'd ditched his men behaving badly lifestyle.

I tend not worry about these studies.
This sentence in the report stops me worrying about it:

But there was no proof that the increased risk of death was directly caused by the PPI drugs
I'm not convinced by the findings of this study.
Yes, the conclusions seem a bit 'iffy'.
Even if (and it's a big 'if') there is a link, it's a very marginal one compared to the proven benefits that PPI drugs bring.
I've been taking it for years with no side effects
I am on it daily following my operation and will wait until advised by my medical professional to cease taking it!
Been taking it for a couple of years after an operation for dysphagia.

No obvious side effects apart from the third ear and a tendency to swear at my wife in Swahili.
Lol..
That was the result of one study by a reputable medical unit and to ignore the conclusions and describing them as a "bit iffy" is irresponsible.
That is what they have studied and that is what they have found.
It is lightweight at the moment, but there will be other studies following this and if the results are replicated, then it is a serious piece of research with practical and serious repercussions.
If it is not replicated in further studies.........then forget it.
If you are a woman taking the drug then you are fine, if you are male, then watch this space.
What would i do if I was taking a PPI? I would continue taking it.

//If you are a woman taking the drug then you are fine,...//

Might be a silly question - but why are women fine to take it , without any concerns ?
I was on it for a while but my doctor changed my prescription to Omeprazole for reasons I can't quite remember.

The way I see it is that he went to doctorin' skool so I as a fully qualified wee truck driver tend to bow to his superior knowledge in matters health related as long as he doesn't start telling me when to change gear or brake.
Bazile.....because in that particular trial 96% of the contributors were MALE...only 4% female.
Sqad, you claim that 'to ignore the conclusions and describing them as a "bit iffy" is irresponsible.' but then go on to say 'It is lightweight at the moment' and 'if the results are replicated' which is a pretty big 'if'.

it was the bit in the report which states 9and then goes on to qualify 'But the research has a number of important limitations' which led to my iffy comment
Zacs......OK......I understand.
However a study from a well respected unit should hardly be described as "iffy" and should be taken on face value until proved otherwise.

I've heard that Ginger can relieve upset stomach / nausea , which i believe can be symptoms of heartburn / indigestion .

Anyone tried it or know if it is effective or not ?
Bazile - yes it is known to have anti-emetic properties.
Yes, Baz, it does work but not straight away. I have stem ginger in syrup which is nice.
