My tongue feels like I've burnt it but it's been like this for over a week now, and now my gums and lips feel strange as well. Any idea what this could be?

Oral thrush?
Are you on any medication? Mucositis is a known side effect of certain drugs and one of the most common toxicities of chemotherapy.

Also, could a certain food be causing an allergic reaction?
do you have diabetes? "funny tongue" was my husband's first syptom before he was diagnosed

Would I be able to tell by looking at it if it was oral thrush? My tongue looks like it always looks, but I've noticed a few ulcer looking lumps on the inside of my bottom lip. The only medication I am on which causes lots of side effects is Methotrexate.
Oral thrush is generally accompanied by white patches in the mouth.
It certainly could be oral candida and MTX would be your most likely culprit as it is immunosuppressive.

Do I need to see my GP or can I treat it myself by buying something from the chemist?
As you are not sure what the problem is a visit to the GP seems sensible.

You will need to see a GP for a prescription of Nystatin and he can prescribe Chlorhexidine Mouthwash at the same time.

Thanks for all your answers, will make an appointment with the GP.
When I had oral thrush through overuse of corsodyl mouthwash, I went to the pharmacist and apologetically asked him to look at my tongue! He laughed and said it was a common request and sold me daktarin gel...so that might be a good easy place to start. If that doesn't help or the pharmacist says its not thrush then a visit to the doctor would be the next step IMO.....mind you it doesn't sound to me like thrush...

I did wonder how it could be thrush as there is no coating or patches on my tongue. Will see the GP just to make sure.

ygritte - there is nothing strange about having Chlorhexidine for mucositis. It is commonly prescribed by the Triage Team at the Cancer Unit where I work.

ygritte I was told the same thing by the pharmacist and by my dentist who had provided the corsodyl as part of post op treatment after dental implants. Apparently it can upset the flora balance in the mouth in susceptible people. I was told by the dentist to stop the corsodyl and use salt water rinses instead
Question Author
Whatever I have hasn't been caused by mouth washes as I've never used them, but I've just phoned the GP and explained to the receptionist who has suggested I phone back after 5pm and I can talk to a doctor. Thanks again for all you answers.
