Let me refine my response - i would ban all drinking alcohol off the planet.

Because it is woven into our culture, alcohol is an 'acceptable' drug in the way the heroin is not.

But it does masses more damage in terms of health, crime, drink driving, domestic violence - it is a nasty insidious evil in our culture and I would remove all traces of it in a moment if I could.

I know the age-old arguments - you punish 'reasonable' drinkers to punish the wrong-doers, which is true, but if we are going to be grownups, we have to accept that just because some people like something, it should be there for the abuse of misusers.

There are plenty of people who would love to, and are capable of, indulging in a self-controlled heroin habit - but we don't let them because it is seen as 'evil', so no-one can have it legally.

The same could apply to alcohol - but of course, we are talking a fictional scenario here - I know all about illegal supplies and crime and all that - it's simply my utopian dream.

I hate the stuff, I hate what is does, and I would stop it if I could.

Could there be functioning hard drug users? I must confess to little knowledge of this but I always thought that a couple of hits and that was the person addicted and thus inflicted with a sole purpose that overrides all else.

I agree that alcorhol can bring out the bad in people (I was brought up in a pub)

My OH is rubbish at drinking but alcohol does make him very funny. He went to the pub with his mates and lasted about an hour before I got a call to pick him up.

I did go to pick him but my uncle was in the pub with his GF. The landlord agreed he could stay asleep where he was. I tried to walk him home, he fell over and landed in a bush. I just left and got our sons to go get him.

But he's a very happy drinker, he's just rubbish at it.

But I do know people who should be banned from drinking....the drink brings out their nasty side, or how I would put it, the real them.

TTT - there was that journalist (don't know his name, I'll try and google) who was a functioning heroin addict. If I remember correctly he was on a private flight with Maggie Thatcher and staff and jacking up in the toilet. No one was aware of his addition.
