I live in a part of the city where there are a lot of houses rented out to students. Out walking yesterday, wearing my new titfer, I saw a group of young women, who'll soon be making up part of this years student intake, leaving one of them. As I passed I heard a loud whisper: 'Freddie Krueger.'
I may have the hat but where do I find the necessary aplomb to carry off wearing it?

Wear your hat with pride. I have a small collection of not very distinguished hats and take great delight when I see one of my old mates cringe when they spot me.

Just grow your nails to 9" or so.....
Have you tried tilting it at a jaunty angle?
Might work wonders!
Gro some stubble, wear some shades and tilt it to one side, job done.

I have to be honest, getting it was a mistake. I have a face and head for plebian cloth caps.
you have the necessary aplomb if you ignored her
Why not try a beret and do the whole Frank Spencer / Benny Hill thing ?
did you have a red and black stripey jumper on?

Berets here in Belfast aren't to be recommended, even now. One in the house many years ago caused me to spend an uncomfortable afternoon in custody.
Oh, didn't think of that.

Balaclava ?
Sounds like you'll be needing one of these, ;-)

If you like it wear it. I've worn a hat for many years despite the fact that it's not all that common these days. Started of with one of those cheap leather ones you get abroad that I wore for fishing and went on from there and now my hats like my glasses I'm lost with out it.

There may be many reasons for wearing a hat but McMouse's 'cringe factor' must surely be the best. :-)
Agree with McM Sandy. Wear your hat with pride! Don't follow fashion - set it.
Don't forget to doff your hat to the ladies sandy. I posted on here a while ago that a gentleman did this to me and it made my day.

Doffing one's hat is a gentlemanly thing to do, but it would defeat the whole purpose of wearing it in the first place, to hide a bald pate.
Well just try touching the brim then and nodding your head. I'm sure it will be just as pleasing to the ladies.
So doff, so doff, so doff
So doff your cap I pray.

You could take a lesson from the folks here in the western U.S. where wearing a hat (Cowboy, of course) is a way of life. There's a lot one learns from wearing such a hat... never taking it off to enter a restaurant... usually only being removed for church or other more solemn occasion. If it is removed, it's never sat down on the flat of its brim, but must be rested on its top. And... it's the reason why there can never be more than 3 cowboys sitting abreast in the fron pickup truck seat (just not enough room).

Quick, but true story... I was riding up an elevator in Oklahoma City several years ago and at the second floor stop and older gentleman got on the elevator wearing a hat (not cowboy, more of a fedora) and at the next stop, three young women got on... all nicely dressed.

The gentleman, now standing in front of me, immediately removed his hat. As we rode along, the women continued a conversation began before boarding the lift and it soon included several crass words that are unrepeatable here... in a few seconds the gentleman quietly replaced his hat on his head as if to say, "I'm definitely not in the presence of ladies"... a small slice of life's theater acted out and I was the only audience... pity...
I love men to wear hats. I think they look great.
