I have read a few astronaut biographies and even though I have no plans to go into space their determination and level headedness has been very inspiring

Back in the early 80's when I was at my lowest ebb, I came across 'You can if you think you can' by Norman Vincent Peale. I still have it although I haven't read it for a while now.
I was aware it was probably (almost definitely) a work of fiction but it came into my life when I needed it most. So that's my answer to your question.
Mr. God this is Hanna by Fynn. I Like to think I've always had a different aspect to the 'norm' on life (Being serious I still do) but that book handed to me 30 ago yrs put a different spin on things even for me.
I wouldn't say "inspired" but the book that has made me understand the world the most is this:

I wish i'd read it when I was 18, rather than a few years ago. By the time i did actually read it I'd learnt many of its lessons but the hard way. My favourite of all is this, "You cannot win an argument" - simple, think about it.
Helen M Stevens A world of Embroidery..... It got me back to my love of thread painting and textile art

Encyclopaedia Brittanica

As a kid I used to pile up sufficient volumes to stand on to reach "forbidden" heights at home.
I've never found books to be inspiring!
Supernature by Lyall Watson
most of it turned out to be utter twaddle but sparked my interest in Forteana
Putting Up With Dolts And Airheads set me up for life.
oh! and
Janet and John
HERE WE GO
Could also have said James Lovelock's Gaia, which has affected my view of how I see the planet.
A friend of mine always answers questions like these with Sun tzu's The art of War, she is a sweet looking little old lady in her 80s, cracks me up. I am sure people expect her to say Mrs Beeton or something!
As a child the Famous Five books encouraged me to delve into greater things - but Noddy taught me to read and to want more. As an adult Chariots of the Gods by Erich von Daniken inspired me to think beyond what I'd been taught.

Can just imagine a young Naomi trying to solve mysteries..... The postman is a Russian spy and his contact is the red haired woman at number 5,.....
Haha! I've always asked 'why?' or 'how?' about everything, Rowan. Can't help myself. :o)
That makes two of us,
Slide Rule.
Nevil Shute Norway's autobiography.
Don't Sweat the Small Stuff by Dr. Richard Carlson was given to me, as a present, during a period of my life when things looked very bleak.
It helped me enormously.
Lady Chatterley's Lover - until i had read it, i never knew gardening could be so much fun.
criminal history of mankind, after reading it and looking at the world,
i could see we have not changed as a species much, read it years ago
very interesting read.

Naomi. Chariots of the Gods by Erich von Daniken, I was once on about my theory of Aliens etc... having read all sorts beforehand and that book was suggested to me some 30+ years ago and it's release was before I was born.
I'm a huge fan of TV's Ancient Aliens even though stretching a bit sometimes.
well i´ve got a lot of reading to do!
hopefully i´ll find something inspirational amongst them.
