My trusty Dyson is on it's last legs, so can any of you dog lovers recommend a good vacuum cleaner to deal with the hairs cast by a very large hairy G.S.D

I say go for a Miele, a birt expensive, but you wouldn't regret it.

There's a box to tick for pet owners on the left.
Hi paddywak, I second Lonnie's' suggestion, Mele, no competition .
Miele Cat and Dog ...did the job brilliantly when we had old Shaney !
I too have a aging Dyson and a very large G.S.D, so I will be looking into the Miele now the moult has started.
Thank You. Tbird+

Thanks for the imput the miele seems to be the one to look at
I shall now be looking for a Miel. I hate my Dyson with a vengeance. It worked well for about a year. It's heavy, shoddily made and the worse investment I ever made (against advice from others).

I have only ever had upright cleaners and am now thinking of a cylinder cleaner as 50% of my floors are a hard surface. How good are Miel cylinder cleaners on carpets, and are they easy to handle for people with arthritis?
Glad you put this thread up paddywak as my vacuum hose has split and I am needing a new one. I shall look into getting a Miele now too as I have a large black labrador who , by the rate she sheds , should be bald by now but still manages to make me have to hoover round a few times a day at least. :-) x
Yep Miele Cat & Dog, I have one and wouldnt recommend anything else...

Its the beast of all hoovers!!
I had an upright Dyson LoftyLottie ....worst investment we also ever made ...it's languishing ......in the loft .
Cleaning stairs with it was a nightmare and it was so heavy and cumbersome .We have wooden floors ,some carpet and rugs and the Meile is excellent on all those surfaces .
I am arthritic and find it easy to handle .
It's even easier to handle if Mr S. does the vacuuming !
There's apparently one called a Miele 'Animal' which has been voted best for pet hairs.

Can't say for certain, I don't use the 'v' word myself!
I have a Dyson 'Animal' at present. I believe the Miele equivalent is the Cat and Dog, Lankeela.
The Dyson 'Animal' should be called the Dyson 'Elephant' - it's so damned heavy and cumbersome!!
crikey bigmamma you vac a few times a day?!
do you live in Derbyshire, you can do mine while you're at it. :o)

Funny what we get used to isn't it? I have a Dyson cylinder & I couldn't manage without it with my hairy little pooch. After reading a lot of criticism about Dysons I may have just been lucky & if my little lad outlives my vac I'd consider buying a Miele....anything to make life easier!
I've only ever had one upright cleaner & hated it.
I have only ever had Dysons, and have got the Dyson ball, which I find very good at picking up the hairs, and not too heavy. Only problem with it is that I do have to cut the hairs away from the roller every now and then. Do they only do the Miele in a cylinder, as I dont do cylinders with my back?
Jules. My problem is basically my back and I have always had uprights. I am interested in what you are saying because it seems you find cylinders cleaners are not good for bad backs.

I was considering changing because I now have quite a lot of hard floors. However, I find my upright Dyson really heavy and very difficult when I do the stairs, even with the attachment.

I would be interested in your views about why you find cylinder cleaners not good with your back.

After my experience with the Dyson Animal, I am going to put a lot of thought into my next cleaner.

Thanks.

Once again thanks everybody for you comments on the merits of the different vacuums. I was particularly interested in Jules comments about cleaning the rollers of Dysons. At the moment Max is moulting and loosing hair in large clumps, when I vacuum it seems I spend half my time cleaning the rollers. Definately looking like a Miele next.
I just find there is more bending involved with a cylinder, dont know why as I suppose you can adopt the same position as with an upright, but a cylinder cleaner absolutely kills my back as I seem to bend more forwards, and put more pressure on the pushing and pulling, if that makes sense?!!
Thanks Jules. I need to keep my back as straight as possible, so an upright might be better. I am also a bit worried that a cylinder might cause me to have to use more arm and shoulder movement as an upright glides on wheels as opposed to me having to put any downward pressure on the handle. I think I will have to go and try one out somewhere.
