The Right Dog Bed?

Our old working collie, Che ,is now semi retired (old age and arthritis- a bit like me) and now sleeps in the house instead of his kennel of straw. The thing is that he doesn't have his own personal den and sleeps where he wants to but he has taken to scraping up one or other of the rugs as though he's trying to make a nest.
Years ago we bought a basket for our rescue dog Friska who we brought back
from the Middle East and she would have nothing to do with it.It's been used as a laundry basket ever since.
Are there any does and don'ts about getting something that he's happy
with ? (also bearing in mind that the Old Farmer lives in dread of spending a penny unnessecarily) :-)

You could look into either memory foam beds for support...or, I've seen anti anxiety beds that look like they envelope the dog. I'd want one myself ;)
My old dog always preferred my bed or the sofa.
A cheap duvet that can be laundered and chucked. OR a soft large bath towel over old cushions?
Question Author
Thanks Pastafreak,
The bed or sofa options are out as he still spends time out in muddy fields!
Anxiety beds sound interesting although I don't really get how they work :-)
Anxiety bed are supposed to work by enveloping the dog so it feels more secure. Similar to swaddling a baby.

Dont know if it works tho.

Brilliant Barmaid!
We still have one or two old duvets from when the children were at home.
AND! Just think how much cash it would save the Old Farmer :-))
I just found this
//To be the ideal calming bed, it needs to have a soft, short faux fur to replicate this feeling of sleeping alongside their littermates, raised sides that give the sense of laying up against their fur Mama and a premium inner filling that they can sink into and feel surrounded by....//
So...deep, plush, soft...and furry
Question Author
Thanks all,

You've given me plenty of ideas to think about :-)
A friend of mine who has collies only ever has cheap duvets. They will wash ok several times and it's no great loss if doggy gets a bit incontinent.

Dog beds are blummin expensive.
Question Author
Lankeela,
Thanks for that
I know they are doing a marketing job but the facts and figures are very helpful :-)
I know a lot who have got them but mine sleep on vet bed (or in my bed).
Collies are autistic, maybe a crate with straw, inside the house?
Question Author
Thanks Buenchico !
Having studied all the options, I find I am spoiled for choice - they all look excellent :-)
Question Author
Zacs,
How can I tell if he's autistic - he's always seemed perfectly normal and lovely.
I can't go for straw beds in the House !!

After much humming and haaing have opted to give this one a try :

Amazing how pet-lovers lap up all the expensive rubbish on the internet (although dogs, cats, etc., have lived perfectly happily for generations without it) What's that old saying, "a fool and his money are soon parted".
I don’t know if you have a range near you?
We bought a memory foam bed for £28
I would use the old duvet that you have and put an old blanket or large towel so it’s easier to wash

Canary42 !
All I can say is that an old Farmer and his faithful willing worker of many years have a bond that transcends filthy lucre and he is quite happy to blue a pony on him.
Of course, you're quite right ..... :-)
