Lots of things seem to be grey these days. Grey kitchens, carpets, sofas and chairs and wall emulsion. Can anyone tell me why this colour is so popular?

It's been the new magnolia/beige for a good few years. It's considered safe...as if everyone loves it.
It's a no from me...even if I was selling, I'd not make everything grey.
The sky is grey too. And the days.
Because lots of colours go with it. It is beginning to lose popularity now apparently
beats the once popular magnolia. yuk !
When I moved in three years ago, lounge was painted grey - painter said it was the "in-colour" - what made it worse was the opposite wall was papered with what looked like tinfoil! Needless to say, both no more!
It's clean, crisp and a good background for 'pops' of colour, especially citrus colours. It's also fairly timeless and classic meaning it works well in period interiors and sleek modern ones and for clothes too. It could also be said to be calming in the stressful modern world.
I thought you were depressed about the weather!
Grey actually looks good when mixed with bright colours.
If used judiciously, it can be nice. But you see people on property programs who just seem to have pointed to the grey carpet, grey paint, grey vinyl flooring, and grey tiles and bought them. They don't realise that there are dozens of shades of grey...both warm and cool, and they don't work together.
I agree some people go over the top with grey . However, it can be a nice backdrop to more vibrant colours and with the right soft furnishings can look very classy. The last time I was in Ikea I noticed they had ditched a lot of the grey interiors in favour of more colourful ones, especially in the Kitchens, so maybe grey will so be out of favour and everything will be neon green Yuk!
Grey is getting a bit sidelined by the 'maximalist' look. Patterns in everything and bright colours to boot. Geometrics mixed with florals etc....anything goes.
It’s everywhere, even new builds are still using it in show houses.
Times had it in for Beige - a few days ago
It's a fad. I remember when interiors had a Tuscan theme - everything was yellow and terracotta. Just the latest fashion. Fashion (same goes for clothes) isn't some kind of wind of change that blows through - its companies getting people to spend their money.
When my daughters were young, grey and pink stripes were the latest in furnishings, so bed sets, matching curtains, rugs etc, and last year it was grey and mustard. I don't follow trends anymore.
Forgot to mention my hair is fifty shades of grey but not by choice!
I’ve surpassed that Barsel , mine is silver :0)

Mine hair is not a nice shade of grey, a bit dark and a bit white, so, now it’s dyed blonde. Would like it to be a proper grey,

Thanks for your answers.
My elder daughter has been into grey for several years. She uses lovely copper light-fittings to break it and also some very colourful pictures - but it's grey! It's not welcoming, it's cold (especially as she has a heat-exchanger and her house is never properly warm.) I don't like it.
The new small group of houses across the way from us in our village has grey window-frames and doors - I complained to Planning about it because all other houses have white or brown and these stand out like a sore thumb - 'town houses in a village setting'.
I'm glad it's diminishing in popularity, it's cold and boring.
^^ PS My hair hasn't gone grey. I had some copper in it naturally and my hairdresser was right when she said 'leave it'- it has gone silvery white mixed with the remaining sort of colour, which ends up as a rather nice silver-mink. I can't believe it doesn't cost me anything!
