Monday December 22nd is the start of the Winter Solstice.

But surely Dec 22nd is the middle of Winter. That is it is the longest night, shortest day. After that it gets lighter leading into Spring. So wouldn't 6 weeks before that date be the start of Winter and 6 weeks after, the end.

The astronomical start of winter (22nd Dec) is known as midwinter traditionally. Meteorologically, winter begins on the first of December.
