He had a good innings. BR was made the year I was born.
You must be the same age as me then, Sandy. Was "Kind Hearts and Coronets" made the same year?
He was good but after his Veeeeeeery long speech at the Oscars where people were yawning the rule was made to limit the time spent on the acceptation speech. RIP Richard.

I see it was just a bit later in '49. The year my brother was born.
Kind hearts and... was a brilliant film. I watched it not so long ago on the TV.
sandy. I thought you were in you're 40's :)
I never knew he was in Kind Hearts and Coronets! You learn something every day...

No, annieasquith. Born in the 40s. But I'm young at heart ;-)

jeffa, he wasn't. It was a film of the same era, is all.
A friend mine had many dealings with Richard and Sheila Attenborough before they went into care. He said they were both lovely, genuinely lovely, kind , thoughtful people. Lord A was always a gentleman, a true old fashioned , well mannered, courteous gentleman at all times. It was always a pleasure for him to visit them.
RIP Dickie...you've made a Great Escape.
a great guy and all round gentleman RIP.
10 Rillington Place is one of my favourites and then of course it must be The Great Escape. Many others, including Ghandi.
Americans think of him as the jovial guy from Miracle on 34th St and Jurassic Park
My favourite is The Guinea Pig in which he plays the part of a working class lad sent to a public school.
10 Rillington Place is the one that really stays with me, His performance as Christie is absolutely chilling. His quiet demeanour and lisping voice sent shivers down my spine the first time I saw it. Brighton Rock of course-playing against type he gave us a psychotic thug in Pinkie-the end and the broken record a master stroke. Flight of the Phoenix, The Great Escape-and as a director Cry Freedom made a real impact on me-the end credit list of all the victims of apartheid was particularly poignant, and , naturally, Ghandi, which was probably the last great 'bio' epic and (deep joy) beat ET at the Oscars. Lovely man, unassuming and erudite. RIP.
has to be the Great Escape for me watched it so much on the tv when I was a kid. RIP
I watched Brighton Rock last week for the first time, and really enjoyed it - RA was really menacing as Pinky.

His other standout role has to be Christie, pretending to weep in the dock - chilling.

Great actor and a sad loss.

how the hell did i miss this??

a legend of the industry - i was fortunate to have met him at my cinema in the west end (royal premiere of gandhi)

very sad - - rest in peace, sir
