i was walking my toddler along the canal today, someone was using a lock, and i was telling her to watch out because if we looked long enough a boat would appear as the lock filled. i gave her a brief explanation of the water going in and out and why. As she's 2, of course she didn't understand a word i said (except perhaps "boat" lol)
I would like to tell my husband i gave her a science lesson :). But what branch would this be?
Physics? Hydro dynamics? mechanics?

Physics - hydrostatics to be exact
dont forget to mention Archimedes - - - - to your hubby that is

the water is not static in the lock (when it's working) though
OK well hydrodynamics

but even in a hydrodynamics course it would come in the early bit where you have to do the basics in ... hydrostatics
It's more engineering than science.
