but maybe they do want to play?
i am saying that as young as some seem there is still the competitiveness of boys, it's virtually programmed into their DNA, some may not like sports, i am sure that some boys and girls don't, but many obviously do, and if they enjoy it then it's game on.
I think that at six years old, they aren't sensible enough to be allowed/encouraged to play contact sports and its up to the adults to foster the competitiveness without letting the dear little savages injure themselves or each other.
have you never been in a school playground, don't you remember the games, because i do, as young as 5/6, playing tag, British bulldog, and some very rough and tumble games.

having lost my grandfather and almost my mother to TB it wouldn't be something i would likely to want around, that is not to say that it's not making a resurgence in UK. Your analogy is plain daft.
