I know I don't usually post serious things but this is not asking for jokey answers.

For the last three months or so, I have had this horrible feeling of what I can only describe as 'impending doom' I have this constant feeling that something catastrophic is going to happen in my life and I can't shake it off.

I wake at night and it's there, this constant 'worry' It's at the back of my mind all the time. My life is very pleasant, I have no obvious troubles or anxieties, apart from my dog being poorly on occasions.

Is it some kind of 'mild' form of depression?

Question Author
You can come anyway, minty. I'll pay for you.
Room for one more, Hoppy?.....My shoes take up little room....☺
I'll bring the sun cream !....
a sense of impending doom is one of the signs of depression (not always present), so that's a possibility. Anyway, see your GP as Sqad and others have advised.

If you are diagnosed with depression you can rely on me to tell you to pull yourself together.
Have we had the serious bit?
Can we now descend into infantile banter please?
Question Author
Ah, thank you, jno. I have been feeling like a pair of curtains lately.
Hi tilly. I agree with the others. Go to the GP and have a blood test to check thyroid and other physical causes, but mild depression sounds likely and can be treated. Cold, dark days don't help anyone. I hope you feel better soon xx

We are not supposed to do infantile banter in Body and Soul, Shoota. Do you have anything serious to add?

Anyway, If off out, so I'll see you all later.
If you haven't already done so, cut caffeine out of your diet. That will be a big help in relieving your anxiety.
An ear infection can have this effect as well.
Do all the things recommended and ask GP to check your ears too.
I was serious, Tilly.

How about you and the bowls player jetting off for a week in the Canaries.

Hi, Hopkirk. it is a good suggestion. We'll see how we are fixed after Christmas.
I'm sure there will be some bargains to be had in the New Year.

Start something in Chatterbank, Shoota.
Tilly2 .. sorry you are worrying. Yea as the others mention - see GP.

I do know that sometimes stuff can get triggered and you wont know where its coming from. Its good to talk about it - just how you feel because you may find there is a very logical explanaton or it lifts completely with talking with someone understanding. Its worth it.
Dont forget - only thoughts Tilly and what you think isn't real but it can influence how you feel so important - if you can replace the thought with a happy/positive thought - that takes you out of the worrying thought but takes abit of practice.
If I'm feeling lousy I find saunas very helpful or play uplifting music & go for a walk. music works best. My doctor has a habit of laughing at everything (if you are ill - he laughs, poor blood results - he laughs) and you come out feeling good and cant help laughing - its bizzare; but you are fit to strangle him sometimes. He is the most fantastic doctor. It will be all ok x
i get this feeling this time of year (christmas)i put it down to thinking of my loved ones who aren't here anymore plus the cold. xxx
GP is your first call, agree with those who have suggested this.
You should never feel alone when going through something like this and the simple act of talking about it to a medical professional may ease the feelings.
Your GP will investigate as to the cause, physical or psychological and then work a solution out with you.
Many of us get like this, I know I did. I went for a course of CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) to ease my anxiety. It isnt like counselling exactly, but it teaches you methods to ease the stress you are feeling towards every day situations.
The impending doom thing is commonly related to stress and anxiety. You say you have no obvious truobles but often its the "non obvious" things that build up in our minds.

Good luck

Thanks to all of you for your helpful and thoughtful answers. It's good to know that other people have gone through this and come out smiling. I need to think very carefully about what I will say to the GP when I go, so that it doesn't sound like, 'I'm a bit fed up.'
the words in your OP sound good to me.
