It doesn't really like like either of those Sandy, but there again I think it must be very young.
It's a newt. There are only three native lizards in the UK: the sand lizard, the common lizard, both of which prefer heathland, and the slow worm, which is legless and sometimes mistaken for a snake. It is none of those!
Yes, a young Palmate Newt.
He will soon be looking for a place to hibernate, usually under leaf-litter or bark.

Slow worms!!! My friend and I used to go up to the Maes, and catch them and put them in milk bottles to frighten our Mums!!! But we always took them back again.

This little newt was under one of our acers which is already shedding its leaves. I put him back in exactly the same place after he'd posed for the photograph. Thanks all.
