The above film was taken from a play by Joseph Kesselring called Bodies in Our Cellar his inspiration for this play was said to be from a novel written by a U.S. female author first published early in the 20th century. The nove has four letters in the title Anyone got a clue as what it is?

Could it be Edith Wharton's The Eyes?
this was asked about 15 questions lower down the page, but I don't think anyone produced a definitive answer.

I don't think the eyes is the answer Iv'e had a look on google but can't find anything significant. I'm stumped
