I had exactly this problem with most of my Nokias especially when they are old i cant help to why its doing it but when this happened to mine it would also just turn off right in the middle of the call or when i got a text in and no it wasnt the battery, Carphone Warehouse may be able to help you more they are very helpful
I also had this with a 8210, I think the little one was dribbling in the mic hole.
Don't blame her i bet it was you who doing the dribbling

let me assume im best explaining in laymans terms:

the microphone in the phone is a tiny unit at the bottom, behind the little hole you talk into, it has two copper or brass legs sticking out of it - these are sprung and make contact with two pads on the circuit board, what usually happens with these is, if it has been dropped or moisture has got in, the contact is broken.

So... if you go to a mobile repair shop, they may clean the contacts for you or they may rip you off !. ideally though, you could buy the driver you need to remove the screws and investigate it yourself (once opened you will see what i mean) they are called 'torx' and about 99p for a screwdriver (the star shaped ones).

who is giving Bel the go ahead to use a screwdriver here! This will only end in tears! Bel if like me you dropped it in the bath it will need replacing, is it insured? Mine is but it is still away!

lol hush up dotty lol thanks guys its actually an old one i have been using and maybe some moisture has gotten into it , thanks for your help .
big jim, who is my youngest! worked for carphone warehouse and may disagree with the helpful bit... point is the 8210 is famed for reliability issues, i fancied one last time round but he persuaded me to get a sony ericsson. much better phone and real simple to use.
