Is it a windows user password (with username)? If so, which version of Windows are you using? If not, is it a BIOS disk password?

all depends!
one possibility is to open the case , find the small battery [ rtc] on the motherboard and take it out for half an hour

when you start up , you may find that the password has disappeared [ as well as the correct time/date which you will have to reset

It is a windows home xp, had it upgraded last year. I'm not too sure about opening the back up, knwoing me I might screw it up! But if I was to open it up, what am I looking for exactly?

I am not too sure about opening up the back, but if I was to do it, what am I meant to be looking for? It is a xp, home edition 2004 I think. It has a windows user password, is the only username on the computer, and am now starting to freak out!
normally it is a button shaped battery about 20mm in diameter , just clipped in , probably marked 3 volts

if you don't feel you can do it yourself , just go out into the street and find the nearest 12 year old boy who will show you
Sorry, just had to comment on the remark by lebesset - I think that's probably the most accurate advice I've ever read! LOL

If it is your Windows password, do you have a password recovery diskette? I suspect the answer will be no as I haven't met anyone yet who does.

If your pc starts up to a screen with an icon to click on (like the frog or duck etc), press the keys ctrl+alt+delete together once, then repeat once more. You should get a screen with two boxes, one for the username and the other for the password.

Type Administrator into the top one and leave the password blank. Does that work? Did the pc have an administrator password set previously? If it did, use that password.

badgerxx.........many thanks for that answer. Grand-daughter has smile on her face again.
