forgive what may be a simple question .... but i really cannot be sure

can jacket potatoes be done in the microwave?

Most microwave ovens (even my 'ultra cheapy' one from Tesco) actually have a programme specifically for jacket potatoes. If you buy pre-packed potatoes (labelled as being suitable for baking) the instructions are usually on the packaging. For a standard-sized potato (if there is such a thing) in a 700W to 800W microwave oven, prick deeply with a fork, wrap...

I often do jacket potatoes in the microwave, but only for about three minutes to start them off. Then into the ordinary oven they go. Done in the microwave the skins aren't usually crispy, and as someone has already said, the skin is the best bit, providing its crisp. Yes, prick them first - less risk of them exploding in either oven, plus they cook quicker.
I do them in the microwave first, half X them as in slice with a knife in a X shape half way down through the potato, then the oven for the crispiness.
I also start in microwave and finish in the oven
