Most microwave ovens (even my 'ultra cheapy' one from Tesco) actually have a programme specifically for jacket potatoes. If you buy pre-packed potatoes (labelled as being suitable for baking) the instructions are usually on the packaging. For a standard-sized potato (if there is such a thing) in a 700W to 800W microwave oven, prick deeply with a fork, wrap...

Yes, but the outsides are squishy.
Yes. Roughly minutes for a medium sized potato.
I always start them of in a microwave, then bang them in the oven to crisp the skin.
No, they are really crappy, whack them in the oven and do them properly!!!!

Yes, but like everyone is asaying, microwave alone and it doesn't get that nice crisp jacket. Perfectly edible though. I do as Mick and start them in the microwave for speed, and then finish them off in the oven. But for best results, patience and conventional oven is best.
^^^ its doing it again, It wont show anything after I copy and paste something, and I am now using FireFox thinking that Chrome was causing the problem!!
You can, but they don't taste nearly as nice.
I do mine the same as mick but I always brush them with olive oil to help the skin crisp up.
I've never bothered piercing them, but by the time I've dug off the less nice marks and stuff there are plenty of places for steam to escape anyway.
I prefer them done in the microwave but I don't eat the skin.

Yes, prick them first.
Yes, pop them into a hot oven for a few minutes to desquish them.

my gratitude also, to the rest of you
It's the only thing I cooked in mine until I ditched it for a waste of space. the skins aren't crispy though.
I have never eaten it, Mick. If I'm cooking them for everyone I will crisp up the skin in the oven and someone will bagsy my skin.
Just bought a halogen oven not tried baked spuds yet will leave a review once I do. Its been great for what I have tried in fact I've not used the regular oven since it arrived.
