Why do we use this as a ' blessing' type of saying when we hear of death ? Does it mean we do believe in the soul living on ?
In the aftermath of the latest tragedy that has happened in America, I have heard it used and wondered why .

Thank you Mark for your reply. Even those of us non- believers in any religion or afterlife still use Rest in Peace, hypocritical maybe ?
no, not hypocritical, just respectful.
No more so than saying "Oh my God!" or "Jesus Christ!" as an exclamation...
It could simply mean may the body lie undisturbed.

Alba, I always say it, just didn't know why ! I wondered if it was for the sake of the mourner rather than the deceased ? I mean no disrespect.
Ah Mark, cursing the god one doesn't believe in. I don't see this the same because when we use Rest in Peace we all mean it, it is how we express our sadness.

I take it to mean 'may memories of you be treasured and not sullied'.
