I am listening to the cricket and the studio commentators have used 'marmelise' twice in the last few minutes. I am really glad this word seems to be staging a comeback.

I can recall my mother using it way back in the early Seventies.
Had to look that one up HK but it's a nice word. Must work it into conversation soon!
Question Author
I first remember it from 'The Ken Dodd Show'. It was part of a catchphrase of one of the Diddymen.
Did Ken Dodd coin it?
Did he pay tax on it?

Chambers does not give any derivation data.
Thanks Howard -never heard of the word before - must marmelise myself for that.
"Did he pay tax on it?"

Don't be silly! Ken Dodd successfully argued in court that he didn't owe the INLAND Revenue because he lived at the coast!
Saw Ken Dodd live once and he went into a monologue about England in the 1700's, covering all sorts of ground and mentioning that, back then, tax was 2p in the pound. He then informed us that his accountant thought it was still 1700.
I've only heard the word in the context of:- 'He'll marmalise you when he finds out' or 'they are getting marmelised' (beaten). I haven't heard anyone use that word for years.
It is of uncertain origin, but the earliest recorded use of marmAlise is in a publication called 'Lern Yerself Scouse' dated 1966. A Liverpool 'birthplace', therefore, seems quite likely!
My apologies, Boxtops, I completely overlooked your response and link above.
