So I've registered but really don't know how it all works. I've started following some people but how do you know when they are tweeting.

My life is not interesting enough to tweet about but do I have to tweet?

No you don't have to tweet, you can just follow the people that do. I signed up to it but have only ever tweeted a couple of times, before I became bored with it, can't even remember the last time I looked in.
