Just read that people are suggesting Gary Barlow deserves a knighthood for organising the Jubilee pop concert ..............what a load of tosh and totally the wrong concept of what being knighted stands for! What do you think?

Gary Barlow OBE - One Big Ego????? :))
Aren't they a recognition of achievement......hard work, dedication to an Art ,Science or Public Service?

Why do Brits find it difficult to accept the factors above, leading to success and then the final award?

Beats me.
Becasue the selection panels hand them out to their mates Sqad and not to those who have acheived the most.
Maidup....ah! got it. ..........you know that do you?
he won't get a knighthood, he'll get a medeal of some sort, OBE for instance. Probably deserved if for the work he put in over the last two years plus the single which will raise a lot of money for charity. The knighthood stoy is tabloid based.......enough said!!!
I do Sqad, if it were more about acheivemnet we'd all be encouraged to nominate people each tear. As it is, it happens behind closed doors where people have to think of this year's batch. Who comes to mind first? There friends and colleagues naturally.

Now I'm not saying there is no process for alerting them to the good folk of our country but it takes some finding out.

Knighthoods and other titles were originally rewards for services to the Crown in wars.

The concept was the ability to kill, not public service or being a "celebrity"

Perhaps we could put on a TV show where "celebs" are let loose with weapons, and the survivors get the Honours?

It might eliminate some of the more irritating performers.

Who'd like to see Jeremy Kyle and Simon Cowell having it out with broadswords?
Ann I agree with you about Gary Barlow, and yes give it to Alfie Boe - I'm a fan of his since the Jubilee concert !
sqad - the Marquess of Bath has his 'wifelets' are you going to have your 'sqadlets'?

It annoys me when anyone gets some sort of award for doing something that made them rich and/or famous.
Forgot to say - Alfie Boe is mega mega yummy and is nice to watch and to listen to.
Agreed Ann. It's not as though he's spent many years involve in charity work or 'services to the arts' which is another reason knighthoods are handed out.
If anyone qualified under one or both of those headings it would be Rolf Harris. Arise Sir Rolf?

Definitely Rolf has been overlooked - do you think maybe it's because he is Australian? At the concert I thought it was really rude to have him cut short his "Two Little boys" song - I thought it was all part of the act at first, but then read afterwards that it wasn't and he kept singing as he was quite miffed - and had every right to be!
