My son tells me via telephone that his smoke alarm is beeping every 30 seconds or so. I told him to change the battery. He has looked and has told me there is no battery but wired through the ceiling.

It should have batteries as a back up. Try putting some in.
I thought that mains wired ones had a battery as backup.
Our wired in one has a back up battery, and it took me ages to work out how to open it.

The make we have has a slot on one side marked by an arrow.

You push a small screwdriver into the slot, and slide the smoke detector sideways off the baseplate.
Mine is similar to Hopkirks, inasmuch as the battery is in a sliding drwaer underneath the alarm unit.

There must be a battery in your son's, otherwise it wouldn't beep at a regular interval.
spider in it ? ours did that it turned out there was a little spider in it
must be the backup battery
Ours has a battery in the control box on the wall. There must be a back-up battery somewhere or it wouldn't work in a power cut.
