In my sons university digs, his desktop computer connects to the wireless transmitter using a dongle.

The connection is poor, so I plan to get him a USB extension lead so he can move the dongle closer and higher.

There is a choice of lengths of lead of 1.8m, 3m and 5m (and probably more)

Is there a reason to get the shortest necessary, or can I happily get the 5m one? That gives more flexibility in routing it behind furniture and varying the location of the dongle.

5 Metres should be fine. That's the longest according to the USB spec.

Thanks Rojash.
You can get a usb cable with a booster built in if you have problems with signal strength.

Thanks. They seem to suggest they are for lenths over 5m, which suggests there is a significant loss over the length of a cable.

I think I will therefore go for a 3m one, as that should suffice.
even better, get a mifi from 3. You can put the dongle where you want then.
