The printer cable has a small flat D shaped socket and with plug to connect to computer. The computer end is the old wide trapezium shaped ca.25 pin plug.
I'm having difficulty finding a replacement cable with ends - small D shaped / USB.

or

an extension to the existing cable terminating in a USB plug.

HP don't seem to sell these, for obvious reasons.

Though not sure why you're mentioning USB? unless you want to connect the printer to a USB port? in which case you'll need the above and a USB parallel adaptor

TKS for yr responses.
I hope that the item shown in your 2nd message is the one I need to attach to my existing HP cable, to plug into my modern (crap Dell) laptop with USB sockets only.
The image does not show the non USB end but it needs to be a female.

Please confirm.
