I am officially stupid. Was meant to be making cottage pie and forgot to get the spuds. I do have some new spuds. Do you think they will mash? Or should i do something else on the top?

Why not slice them thinly and lay them across the top with maybe a sprinkling of cheese if that is your type of thing.

bizarre, I read your post as "sprouts" not spuds.. I would go with the others options

lol, we can't even do that at the moment. The spuds are in the garden and its lashing it down so I am refusing to go and start digging. May have to change plans! But thanks all.

What else can i serve with cauliflour and swiss chard!?

i always make the topping with mashed up cauli and broc with a bit of grated cheese mixed in, it's really tasty.

Dont be a wimp Barmaid. Put on your wellies and get out there. They will taste so lovely straight from the soil. The digging will be easy as the soil is soft and moist - oh all right sodden!

If you hae a swede and carrots - mash them with some butter and put on the top. Very tasty

right here we go cook the mince and the veg serve with yorkshire puds and let everyone shovel the mince and veg into the yorkies we call it mush pie - allways a winner

thanks box tops my oteher family fav is land mines - bangers stuck in mash in an ocean of onion gravy - we saw this on a tv prog years ago about what your fav dish was - I fell about laughing but the other half and our daughter ( then about 15) said great idea and so a family fav was born- me I'd rather have a chilli

It's obviously too late now - but for the future, if the same thing occurs.
Cook some pasta and a basic white sauce, mix the 2 together and use for the topping.
