It seems that pursuing the Leicester trail was wrong after all, and I should be concentrating instead on a Thomas Tilley who was born in Newport Pagnell in 1785. There must be a record of his birth and parents somewhere, but I have been unable to find it. I have traced my family back to him, but there I have encountered a brick wall.
If anyone can help me to go back a bit further, I wiuld be most grateful.

My Thomas was born in 1785 and his son William Henry was my 3great grandfather.....evidence the 1841 census. It is the 1785 one who is proving to be a brick wall. I am sure of these two, but I feel frustrated by not being able to go back any further.
William Henry married a Mary Cooper, and, amazingly, through the owner of an Ancestry tree, I may have found a connection with a local person who is living near me. I contacted him through the website, and am holding my breath.....not for too long, I hope!
Thank you again, Dotty, you are very kind.
on the 1841 census, adult ages were rounded DOWN to the nearest multiple of 5, between the ages of 15 and 70. Not all enumerators followed that instruction, but the majority did. This means that in most cases on the 1841, anyone recorded as 15 could be abything up to `19, anyone 20 could be beween 20 and 24 and so on, you can soon tell if the enumerator did this as you will invariably find alot of 15 year old twins! Relationships were not given at all on the 1841 and so it is not useful to assume the parents of someone,
