Be honest: do you throw your used fag-ends on the ground? And if so, why?

I've given up commenting on this to those who do it. I'm always polite but get mostly ignored or sworn at. I'm sure most of these people wouldn't throw a used tissue on the ground, but seem to regard a fag-end as somehow not counting as litter.

I've seen people do it right near bins too. I had an argument with some colleagues once, who defended doing this. They said, you can't throw it in a bin as it might catch fire. So I suggested stubbing the cigarette out first. On what? they asked. The side of the bin, maybe? But that would singe the bin!

It's so widespread now I don't suppose it's ever going to make a difference anyway - pavements and gutters are peppered with fag-ends. But I wondered if anyone here who does it might like to explain why they think it's okay.

I like you statistics there JJ - most non smokers seem to forget about exhaust emissions when having a pop at smokers :) I only smoke on the veranda when I'm at home, I have a cig during my break at work and always put the stub in the bin and if I'm at the pub I use the wee ashtrays on the wall. I don't tend to smoke anywhere else.
I saw a woman prosecuted in court for dropping a fag end. she was given an £80 fine for littering (also close to a bin), which she refused to pay.. ended up with over £500 in costs and fines, plus a criminal record.. and still had to pay the original £80.

so that was an expensive fag!

OH is a jam-jar convert - there's one by the front door and one in the back garden - all the stubs go straight in the jam-jar and the lid firmly on. It's a great idea - no risk of fire from not-quite-out stubs, it's all contained. The bloke next door does it too. Perhaps we should patent it. BoxyStubJars.
Good idea boxtops, pretty ones for the ladies and macho ones for the men...you'd make a fortune lol.....I could put designs forward for you...well I've got to make some cash somewhere <smile>
It's funny how attitudes to smoking have changed so completely over the past 50 years. At one time it was not only tolerated but actively encouraged; witness adverts from the fifties with loving wife embracing hubby who is digging the garden with pipe firmly attached in gob. It's well over twenty years since I last smoked a pipe, and can't remember seeing anyone else do so for a long time.
Mike I should imagine it's because there's more medical evidence given for it damaging health. I used to like the smell of a pipe especially when my uncle smoked Old Condor...lovely smell...now if cigarette had that smell I'd go and stand with the smokers lol.
never going to be ok!................I smoke!...........never throw my cigarette end down anywhere!....I put it out and deposit in the nearest bin, otherwise I take it with me and put it in my bin at home!..............
Is it just me, i walk miles around Stoke and have never seen a problem with discarded fag ends,
I hate smoking while walking down the street, If I want one I'll sit next to a bin with a 'grid' on the top. I also have a small tube thing that you can put the stub in that puts it out when you seal the end and dispose of it later. I only smoke in the downstairs loo so not to spoil the house, bought a flat once that when the previous owners moved out the walls were yellow apart from where furniture had been pushed against them.
Also, where I used to work, it took 5 minutes to smash the ciggy bin off the wall but 6 months to fix a PC!
Can't stand people that don't pick up dog 'bits' or if they do they then hang the bag on a tree!
The people who throw ciggy butts on the street are of the type that wouldn't change, even if there was a hefty fine. There is always a certain percentage of bad ones in a lot of anything. Most smokers I've come across are fairly considerate people.
I flick the cherry off the end and poke them in my back pocket. The wife complains but I'd rather not litter.
out the car window, greatest ash tray. Seen in the sea? I've never seen them nor in the Thames where I live.
Maybe smokers should save and plant the butts in their garden... hoping they will grow new cigarettes!
I have seen a lot of people do that. I used to smoke and i always made sure that i snub it off and drop the ends in a trash can.
