I asked // Is hell a just punishment? (an eternity of suffering for finite sins) //
keyplus replied

// Now to answer your question in SIMPLE words.

1 - yes for certain sins. //

birdie responded with
// Are there sins for which you don't go to Hell? Can you give me an example of a sin that doesn't condemn you to Hell? //

To my knowledge, keyplus hasnt responded yet to birdies Q, just evaded the Q.
So I will ask, what sin DOESNT condemm me to an eternity of suffering at the hands of Allaha (or Jehovah, jesus, zeus et all)

Cowtipper - “Yes, it sucks for the individual but hopefully advances civilization to where one day its not necessary.”.

This is a monstrous statement. This states that 'The Means Justify The Ends'. You appear to be happily typing that it doesn't matter how horrendously people are treated, just as long as their treatment results in a better world for you and yours; their suffering is justified and necessary.

I agree with Beso - “Cowtipper shows why the religious are dangerous people.”

Shameful.
I agree with Birdie, (gosh), although the views with regard to slavery are a very perverted interpretation of religion and not those which would be tolerated in European Christian society.
Mike11111 -

No one is saying that the religious are devoid of logic.

I have never said that religious people are devoid of the capacity to think and argue logically. However, when pressed, quite a lot of religious people do indeed throw logic out of the window.
// "'Slavery isn't moral or immoral- just a thing" //

Such muddled thinking aptly illustrates why it is better to think and work out for yourself your own morals and behaviour, than just be given a list to obey.
"For example, I think you'd agree that slavery is immoral? However, after healing a slave, Jesus himself said, “Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favour, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.” (Colossians Chapter 3, Verse 22 [New International Version]). From this quote, it is clear that Jesus has no problem with the concept of slavery. "

The definition of immoral":"conflicting with generally or traditionally held moral principles"
Slavery was moral 2000 years ago. Its not now.

All of my statements about slavery and its history were an answer to this specific statement. The result of Jesus' teachings brought slavery to an end. It took 1700 years for the church to grow enough to have the political and moral authority to change it. If you doubt it look it up.

"Apart from the fact you seem unable to think of a profession that doesn't require land ownership such as entertainers, musicians, apprentices, etc., "

Google "definition means".

//"Cowtipper - “Yes, it sucks for the individual but hopefully advances civilization to where one day its not necessary.”. "//
"This is a monstrous statement."

Context:
"Wars are fought, people will die. When someone gets drafted into the Army they become a slave. If they die in a war then their personal sacrifice has hopefully provided for the betterment of man. Yes, it sucks for the individual but hopefully advances civilization to where one day its not necessary. "

Tell that to my three great uncles that died on the beaches in Normandy. Tell them that the world didn't need them to die because the means didn't justify the ends.
Jesus had no problem with slavery. That makes it OK then because He was perfect?

This is the kind of circular logic that provides the foundation for religious philosophy. Obviously, personality cults are no basis for sound morality.

Slavery was never moral.
And the religious wonder why we insult their beliefs.

It is because their beliefs are an insult to intelligence.
//"Beso
Jesus had no problem with slavery. That makes it OK then because He was perfect? "//

First: Jesus didn't say this.
Second: The world Jesus lived in had much worse things than slavery to worry about.
Third: We've discussed entrenched social beliefs. How would you have done it?
Morals refers to generally accepted customs of conduct and right living in a society, and to the individual's practice in relation to these: the morals of our civilization.
Well then Cowtipper. It is blatantly obvious that using an ancient book as a guide to modern morality is entirely inappropriate.
