Please can anyone tell roughly how much solicitors charge for this service? Would it be possible to do it myself? Thanks

it is possible to do it yourself. Tghere are 2 types - property and affairs (money) and personal welfare (health decisions) you can download the forms from the office of the public guardian website, and they cost £150 to register (each) although i have a feeling that price has changed recently.
You also might need to pay a professional to certify that he has capacity
as a rough (Ish) guide me and husband did them at the solicitors (so four in total) plus a mirror will and it cost us roughly £800 altogether. This DIDN'T include registering them (they are not currently registered) but did includ ethe certification by the solicitor that we weren't acting under duress and that we were who we said we were and also includes storage at the solicitors office Whenever i put this price on here i get loads of peeps telling me i was ripped off, but i feel safe that they are done properly
ps it takes a while - can be in the order of months rather than weeks

Thank you bednobs :)
The cost for registering each LPA (Court Fee) is currently £120 unless your income is below £16,500 when it is reduced until under £12,000 (for the INDIVIDUAL) it is free.

Locally solicitors charge up to £1000 plus for an LPA including registration paperwork. We charge £200 including registration paperwork (but not Court Fee).

It is a really bad idea NOT to register for two reasons:
1) It takes at least 3 months - hardly helpful in an emergency.
2) If it is rejected by the Office of the Public Guardian (and many are) it may be too late to do anything other than go to the expense and effort and delay of applying to be a Deputy.
