my wife got me abeer making kit for xmas and it says that i need 40 one leater bottles with lids and i thort that maybe just a couple of empty bottles of coke would do the job is this true or not will the beer go flat ???

40 1 litre bottles = twenty 2 litre (coke size) bottles.

When you get to the bottling stage, you will need to double up on the sugar ie. if the instructions say add one teaspoon per 1 litre bottle, add two teaspoons per (coke size) bottle - then it will be just as fizzy when ready.
Good luck and keep everything well sterilized.
No need to bottle your home-made beer if it is for your own use. Leave it in the barrel and use the tap to decant it as required.
That's fine if he wants a still ale. He will need to transfer to biottles or a pressure barrel if he wants it fizzy.
those beer kits usually make 23L. Maybe worth checking the size's as you'd need about 40 x 500ml bottles for that kind of brew length.
Just remember the bigger the bottle the more you have to drink at one sitting
