This happened to us last week, me & my daughter had to wait for asnother 30 mins for bus (FIRST SERVICE), my weekly ticket was £16, the bus full of passengers.
I'm guessing, Jackles, that you live in a major conurbation. Those of us who live in rural (or, like me, semi-rural) locations probably have fewer problems.

I've caught an evening bus into Ipswich, to go to the pub, on several occasions where I've only had a £20 note. Each of the three different regular drivers on that route has been happy to accept my assertion that I'd be travelling on the last bus back, and that I'd pay my return fare then.
I am totally in awe at Bus Drivers and Train condictors, how do they manage to maintain that ignorant grumpy attitude towards their customers without getting sacked? noone in a shop would get away with it, they must be very valued by their employers,

There used to be a service, between Halesworth and Southwold, where they didn't issue any tickets despite the fact that return fares were available. The driver on the outbound bus would ask which bus you expected to return on, and then answer with: "It's Fred on that one. Just tell him you paid Dave on the way out"!.

Of course the downside to living in some of the more rural areas of Suffolk is that there are lots of villages which only get ONE BUS (in each direction, to facilitate a shopping trip to the nearest town) PER MONTH ;-(
Where I live, it's "exact fare only". If you have to put in more, too bad: no change given.
Yeh, a few months back my ticket got wet on foot from bus to home, i was refused the next day as i didnt realize i placed my jacket on the radiator over night for morning, i had to treck to the depot on foot, to replace my ticket.

The drivers told me i had photo copied it, not to mention of making me feel embarressed after arguing the point, & holding the other passengers up on there route.

The depot said they could have checked the ticket on a ultra violet light, i have many more....
Ipswich Buses also have the 'exact fare' system but, if you ask for it, you can be given 'change' in the form of a credit ticket, which can either be used towards payment of a future fare or refunded by calling at the enquiry office in the town centre.
That sounds like a fair fare system, Chris.
If I have to get the bus back from sixthform it's 55p, from either schools and if I have to give them a pound they don't mind and I always get change. There's a sign asking you to have exact change if possible.
I had £5 for a £3.50 fare: the bus driver snarled that he didn't have enough change - on those buses they had all the change on a sort-of tray and it was overflowing! Power-mad driver.
Bring back the clippy!!!
Not a problem for me as I have a bus pass. However I do experience a couple of things that do annoy me with our local bus drivers. First, doesn't matter where you stand at the bus stop they always stop at a point where you have to walk 5 - 10 paces to get to the door. Secondly, once embarked they wait until you're halfway to your seat and then lurch away at such a speed that you stumble. Barstewards.
Do you think they all get the same trainning at bus driving school
