Hi all, can anyone recommend a good book for a starting point on communism. Would like to learn about its origins, it's original premise etc etc. Who originally subscribed to the idea? I find that when I read a book it refers to differing forms of socialism i.e. Leninist, Marxist, Maoist....would like to understand the differences.
I notice the small "c", so you already have some ideas. It's a very old idea - the early Christians were communists. The idea of holding property in common is found in many simple societies and has often been tried by small groups on a religious basis. Beware of political propaganda that identifies communism with Stalin's methods. There is no true communist society in the world, since it's a Utopian ideal. Marx and Engels invented Communism - capital "c" - as a later development of Socialism.
