A friend of mine was an examiner after he left the army, and he told me that you need an average of two hours for every year that you have been alive, therefore at 20 you need 40 hours. However, this was some years ago, and the test is now harder.

Also, remember that it is an average. If it was true, then my wife would 86, she just doesn't know it!

I took 4 times to pass, never gave up trying but the old fuddy duddies I had the first three times couldnt see the car they asked me to read the number plate off. My friend just passed hers second time around, but six years apart she was terrified of the test, but done it all the same. Good Luck.

trouble 16, You are correct, most (probably 90%) of the vehicles sold in the US today have automatic transmissions.  I've never driven a stick (our term for manual transmission) - my husband tried to teach me once (he had an old Isuzu that was a manual), but he gave up after about 15 minutes.
don't worry about how long it is taking you my sister did not pass until 3 test ...

I probably hold the record for negative achievement... Passed aged 37 after trying on and off for 18 yes 18 years!  Took three tests, two of which old style (with the three questions at the end) and the third new style (with theory test first).  Have now been driving for 5 years but I am still not exactly brilliant:  don't really go on motorways without someone navigating (telling me which lane I should be in basically). Nevertheless I have been so far, either a very safe driver or very lucky (thouch wood).  Good luck.
