Next week I've got a couple coming to our house for a meal. They're not posh or anything but they are real foodies so I want to impress. I'm not after actual recipes (I can cook & have a zillion cook books) but I just need some suggestions for a starter and a main course with a 'wow' factor.

Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks.

This is always enjoyed here.  Get (however many)ramekin dishes butter each one crack one egg in each cut up ham and scatter on top of egg.  Pour enough cream just to cover egg lightly and cover with grated cheese.  Put in an oven dish deep enough to surround with boiled water up to half way (bain marie).  Cook at around 200 for 20 mins to half an hour until set and serve.  Always tasty for starter
And you can't beat a steak for the main course, whether it be beef, pork or fish.

kleftico in foil wraps?

maybe goatcheese croustades for a starter - very tangy!
Souffle is always impressive.
Chilled blueberry soup - had the first time on holiday recently and was very good. Suitable for the hot weather and can be prepared in advance. Also a bit different.
you could try oysters as a starter, serve live with lots of good bread, lemon juice and really crisp dry white wine.
I just read the most interesting recipe in the paper today....this chef put a bit of spaghettie, a square of mozarella cheese and fresh basil INSIDE the meatball!!!!!!  Of course, all covered in tomato sauce....
A simple starter of 'Cappucini Berkeley'.

Damn! You've all come up with such great ideas I'm more confused than ever. I might keep it simple and go for the oysters depressedmgl suggested although sillymoo's blueberry soup is unusual and sounds good. I'm still pondering the main course. All your suggestions are fantastic - thanks to you all.
