When was the last great Bordeaux vintage?

It was in 1990, preceded by the truly great vintage of 1982, which compares with that of 1947, 1949 and 1961. The jury is still out on last year''s harvest, but makers are quietly confident that with the right balance of dry and wet weather through the growing season and no rot on the grapes 2000 may be another very good year.

Other good years, if not quite qualifying as great, include 1996, '95, '89, '88 and '86. But some very fine wines were made in many of these and other years - similarly some poor ones were made in great years.
