Sound problem

My PC doesn't seem to be playing any sounds. The speakers are in correctly, and everytime I try to play music via Windows Media Player it says

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly."

I have recently had a virus on my PC, and I deleted some of the infected files. I suspect the sound device may have been one of them.

Is there a way I can sort out this problem?
