Hi izzie, there is a very large Jewish community beside us, the ladies wear a wig after they are married, they also have to cover any flesh when out and about, hence the long skirts and cardigans, this is because only their husband should see their bare flesh, the younger girls dress this way too, presumably they do this to cover up until they meet and marry their husband.
The men wear a skull cap called a kippah or a yarmulke, they wear this at all times along with a prayer shawl with long tasstles on it, usually in the colours of the Israeli flag, blue and white, they also tie a leather strap to their upper arm, this had a very tiny 'box' attached to it with a scroll in it, the shawl and the leather strap are a significant part of their daily routine when they go to the Synagogue
I hope this helps
Bobbi
