I have a friend who's allergic to tomatoes, and so I was wondering if there's any alternative to tomato puree that's used on pizzas? Thanks

You can use your imagination with pizza, but several supermarkets do sell pizza without tomato sauce. For example, I'm sure I've seen a garlic mushroom one in Waitrose which doesn't have any tomato.

I can imagine that a thin layer of pesto would be quite tasty instead, or a layer of finely pureed onion & garlic, to give texture and moistness (is that a word ?!)

bbq sauce is very nice on a pizza base then toppings like chicken are very tasty

Here's one:

Alternatively, Google for "White Pizza" or "Pizza Bianca".

Cool, thanks for the suggestions, the bbq sauce idea sounds really good for an informal event. Gonna have to get me chef's hat on now!
check that the bbq sauce isnt derived from tomato tho!

How about:

  • Grill quartered red peppers until the skins are about 80% black.
  • Allow to cool then remove skins.
  • Puree with garlic, herbs, salt, pepper, olive oil, lemon juice and balsamico vinegar.

Hey presto - it looks like tomato sauce but tastes even better.

Yes moistness is a word (in my dictionary anyway).  I should know - I couldn't read, hear or even THINK about the "m" word for YEARS without it sending shivvers down my spine.  Used to freak me out!

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm pizza - all sounds yummy to me.  I suggest you make enough for more than just your friend with the allergy - I think everyone will be fighting over these new pizzas! :-)

...or what about ajvar, a relish made from red peppers, aubergine, chilli and garlic. Popular in the Balkans. It's easy to get hold of here in Germany - I don't know how common it is in the UK. Should make an excellent substitute for tomato sauce.
