I pass several fields a few miles from where I live which are covered with plastic strips (about 500mm wide) Has anyone any ideas on what the farmer is growing?

Seeds going to turn into low plants, if the strips are flat.  Maybe soft fruits. The birds will not be able to pinch them - not many anyway.  The fruit plants should be kept fairly dry I think in sandy soil. It rather depends on where you live, but just now there are still English strawbs. from Kent and from Gloucester were last week on sale in NW London.  I think some areas might be getting English raspberries, and the U.K. blueberries are to come.  Cucumbers and courgettes lie flat.  A lot more is grown here now especially with the plastic covering.   For bigger stuff, the plastic has to be raised on half-hoop things, forming plastic tunnels.   Stop by next time you pass and get the 'straight from the horse's mouth' answer!  The farmer would be pleased you asked and he might do a pick-your-own thing.
