How do you'dilute' seeds?

I seem to remember that when sowing very small seeds, such as carrots, it's best to 'dilute' them in some other medium so that they scatter more widely rather than in clumps.
What is it that you use? Is it sand? If so, it would have to be very fine and very dry. Is there anything else that will do?

Clanad

The handiest item for planting small seeds is the common medicine cabinet eye-dropper. I place the seeds in the glass tube and, surprisingly, a little squirt on the rubber "bellows" ejects just one seed. This keeps them in order and rarely do I have to thin them...

tht does sound groovy but if I tried it they'd probably all clump in the hole!
I saw someone on tv use talc mixed into the seeds, can't remember what they were but that meant they showed up on the dark soil ..........which, at the time, I thought was genius! havn't tried it though
