I have come down with a cold and have had to blow my nose a lot today and already the skin around my nose, especially my upper lip is getting dry and sore. What is the best thing to prevent this getting worse?

dont lick it keep it lubricated e45 cream is good
Vaseline, it forms a barrier and stops the skin drying out. Doesn't look wonderful, but possibly looks better than the red dry skin.
smother you nose with vaseline!! inside nostrills too
Yes definitely inside the nostrils too.
use tissues with balsam in to nice and soft on the old nose

Thankyou! Don't think theres any danger of licking my nose lol (only joking, know what you mean!)
Wasn't sure about vaseline because I read in a magazine that any products with petroleum in make dry skin worse (although it was referring particularly to chapped lips) but will give it a go!
I use a product called Happinose. It comes in a tube and has a lovely scent... not sure it would be great on the lips tho..
seriously use e45 its so gentle and can be used on babies so cant be that bad for your skin

ooh that sounds nice! its not so much my lips per se but my upper lippy bit where I would have a moustache if I were a man!
if it gets really bad go to the docs who maybe able to perscribe anti biotics

Think I will invest in both Vaseline and e45. Thanks for the very rapid responses!

ooh definitely not that bad yet!! cold only began today and am taking echinacea and paracetamol and drinking lots of fluids so should hopefully pass with minimal nose blowing issues!
oh and dont laugh as your skin will crack dont yawn in fact dont breath lol
Question Author
haha, did actually just laugh at that and it did actually hurt! urrrgh don't like colds!!
I would go with the Vaseline too, and slather it on before - admittedly not a great look, but it soaks in over night, then put a thin layer on in the morning and it should help heal and protect your poorly snout :@)

Ta muchly everyone! Am off to shower and hopefully steam my airways so nose blowing requirements will be kept at a minimum! Will get some vaseline later too!
horrible i know had a really bad one last month just let nature take its course and youll be fine a nice bottle of wine and a good movie under the duvet with a takeaway cos you cant go out looking like the joker can you lol
Vaseline or Vick vapour rub (the latter helps breathing as well).
I find the tissues impregnated with balm help avoid this condition.
Don't use vasaline, its horrid and makes your face all slimy. Last time I had a cold I got a wee pot of neutrogena immediate repair lip balm. Its made for putting round the nose bit aswell and its fab. Mine didnt get sore at all even though I was blowing loads. Got it from Boots where the lip balm lives
