My vote is the Escort Convertible: generally driven by total knob'eads who would buy any old piece of crapola if it didn't have a roof.

Most certainly has to be the "Ford Crapi".

It would definately take some doing to be worse than the Ford Ka. However, I think that Rover managed it with the CityRover. Generally anything made in Asia (except Japan) is complete sh!te, by definition. Daewoo, Proton, KIA, Hyundai fall into this catagory.
Another contender for crappest car would be the Mazda 121 that was a mere re-badging of the @rse Fiesta Mk4.
Bollox off-roaders would have to be the Vauxhall Frontera and the Ford Maverick, what a complete waste of time and effort they were.

The crappiest car for me has to be either the Lada or the Skoda, God they really were the biggest heaps of crap on the market, I know that VW have come to the rescue of Skoda and if you debadged em they would probably sell more of em, cos unfortunately **** sticks

Quite hard to come up with just one answer, there have been lots of candidates! The Escort range generally was not up to much, particularly towards the end, The kia Mentor was a low point in a generally awful range, being dull, unrefined and generally unpleasant, and Mercedes deserved a good kicking for the terrible V-class MPV. The Crysler Neon was/is cheap and nasty, like the Fiat Seicento, and anything made by Hyundi must be a good contender. The most pointless car award goes to the Subaru Justy, (a four wheel drive supermini??) And the suzuki jimni is horrible to own, drive and look at, I could go on all day here!  I going to go for the Toyota Prius, Its slow, ugly, nasty to drive, but also pretentious and doesnt live up to its bold claims of ecofriendlyness, a proper car with a diesel engine is nearly as economical, can cost less, and is miles better to drive.

For the record, the Ford Ka is one of the best small cars to actually drive, I agree the looks take some getting used to, but if you enjoy driving, they are great fun.

Rover 100 - new "supermini" in 1996, despite being designed in 1980.  I should know, I had one.
When it comes to looks, it must be the Fiat Multipla - the top half designed by one team working in metric, and the bottom half designed by people working in feet and inches! (They never met each other either - the two halves were welded together just before they came out of the factory gates!

some older people remember the austin allegro, with a square steering wheel....

not all jap cars were that good either. do you see many datsuns on the road pre 1985 for example? i think they were built with pre rusted steel much like the mark three escort.

v64paul......I agree totally about the Austin Allaggro.    A horrible piece of junk.  I had an incident where a little cross-something-or-other mutt ran into the front and the car just about disintegrated.   Not the best I`ve owned. With a higher budget I could have bought a Lada or Polski Fiat.
PS     for all animal lovers....the mutt just wandered off without as much as a by-your-leave.
For rust, I think the Maestro must have been one of the worst. Became familiar with one in 1994 and it was rusting after 6 months. Driving, I think my worst so far has been a Rover Metro GTa (the 1.1 import version, not the 1.4!!). Who put the steering wheel off centre? Anything more than a 20 minute drive and you needed your spine straightening! 2nd place for a bad drive goes to my current T reg Megane. Zero character to it really and very under powered despite a 1.6 engine.

The worst car I have driven was a 18 diesel (non turbo) Escort.  It had no power steering and I think I could have walked faster.  Absolutley hatefull

Sierra 2.3 Diesel. The crappiest car known to man. Rusted like nobodies business, rubbish non turbo engine, rear wheel drive so any snowflakes around sent you sidewards at the first opportunity, stupid sunroof mechanism, ariel that you could only put down once, as it was impossible to get the thing back out again. windows that pooped out / fell without any particular warning at any particular speed. If you managed a long enough journey and you could get to it, anything approaching 80 would send the temperature soaring. Power nothing and hopeless lights.

The brakes weren't bad mind you.

And before you say anything, it was 3 years old, brought from my uncle and it was his old rep car.

And no, I haven't spoken to him since.

Interesting how many comments regarding BL/Rover Cars - one of the reasons MGRover are in the trouble they are in today.

Disagree about the comments about the Suzuki Jimny. Good fun to hire on holiday - wouldn't like to live with one everyday though. The worst car I've driven recently was a Daewoo Matiz (who do GM think they're fooling rebadging them as Chevys) which I hired in Malta. Turn on the aircon and there was no power left to move the car. Just as well it didn't have power steering!
