This year today is the shortest day. The solstice actually happens at 12:04pm GMT.
Solstice? I thought that was a special type of Lucozade drink?
Did you?

Ho ho ho!

far far to much for my tiny brain to take in

Thank you rollo
This is the day with the least amount of light. from now on the daylight increases. I always say the shortest day is usually the last Sunday in March when the clocks go on and we lose an hour (So only 23 hours in that day) and the longest in October when the clocks back. (So 25 hours in that day).
Simple answer is that New Years day is the 1st of January and the shortest day was the 21st December. The calendar and the solstices are not alligned, but it maybe would be a bad idea if they were. I already feel better knowing that we are past the shortest day - it makes me feel spring is on the way. New research seems to suggest that the lack of sunlight and the subsequent vitamin D deficiencies are contributing massively to our health issues in Scotland - particularly our high rate of MS.
