It's nice to know the weight , also it helps you get an image of the new baby in your head if you're not going to see the wee poppet :-)
I haven't got a clue why they do it, I'm not a baby person, but maybe if the baby was really big, painful to carry round and give birth to, I think the poor mother has the right to say how big and heavy it was, pat her on the back!

But the fashonable skinny world we live in I can see really vain people these days saying how light their baby is, like the joke about a women being happy she is slim and saying she's back to her birth weight.

I think most parents mention it though because its like tradition, back in the days people didnt have much excitement in their lives or anything but the weather to talk about, they created all these stupid traditions we get stuck with today.
Having been a midwife I can tell you that " What weight ? " is the next question after "Is it a boy , or a girl ? "
Having a dig at me are you??!!! :-)

I included the weight since the baby was premature!
have always thought exactly the same, you family tells the whole world something you try and hide for the rest of your life :-)
My mate became a Dad for the first time recently. I took the news when he phoned. When I told Mrs. Blue, the first thing she asked was: "What weight?" She was amazed that I hadn't asked!!
It is nice to know the baby's weight, for relatives and friends wishing to buy baby clothes for the new arrival, especially if they don't live close enough to visit. Particularly, when baby arrives unexpectedly/prematurely. Or as in the instance of the arrival of my friend's baby who weighed 11lb at birth, and was immediately in need of 3mths to 6mths clothes.
When infant mortality was much higher than it is now, the birth weight of a baby was an indicator of it's chance of survival
Why not mention the weight, what else are you going to say when describing a newborn baby? As bigmamma says, it gives you idea of how tiny they are.

Goes back to the days of "Baby Competitions" where the fattest and ugliest was acclaimed the winner, much to the self satisfaction of the parents. Now when the weight is announced, everyone smiles and says something stupid like " that's a good weight" or "really" ...totally senseless and meaningless.
