Check the wiring underneath the seat. Has anyone been a bit rough with the seat recently, e.g. rammed it back hard?

The same quirk affects Citroen Saxos (pretty much the same car). A dealer will charge a fortune to fix it, kneel down and have a look underneath with a torch.

I'd not heard of them inflating spontaneously, the garage merely cautioned that it wouldn't work.
My wife had a 106, same happened. It was a wire under the seat which was fixed for a pittence at a small local garage.

Peugeot specialists said it may be because the car was 10 years old at the time, the life of the airbag, which should be replaced costing hundreds!
When the airbag light is on it normally means that the airbag system is also not working. I would get it checked out asap
