Question Author

my complete question is:

where does the phrase "coal in stocking" come from?

i am not interested in who does it,i want to know why it started.who was the first person to get coal & why

it is from the days when people were generally poorer.

it was given as a Christmas present a long with, traditionally, and apple, orange and a bag of nuts.

it is given for luck and supposed to be carried around on the body. my dad is 77 and to this day carries a piece of coal in his pocket - not sure why its lucky though - perhaps because it is a source of heat??
